Before and after

How creators make it by hand, and how you make it here

By hand

  1. ChatGPT: write the story: the setting, the wrong detail, the rule, the twist. source
  2. Leonardo: make each dark scene as a still picture, one by one. source
  3. DupDub: turn the script into a narrated voice-over. source
  4. Vexub: the video tool the same tutorial uses to put the short together. source
  5. A free editor: time the pictures to the voice, add captions, music and the scare sounds. source

On MakeViral about 3 to 6 minutes

  1. Type one line, or paste your own story (up to 800 words).
  2. The AI writes the script to the scary story recipe and checks the facts.
  3. Every scene is drawn in one look with the same characters, then animated.
  4. Voice-over in 29 languages, captions, music and sound effects are added.
  5. Change any line or scene, then download a 9:16 MP4 with no watermark.

What is a scary story video?

A scary story video is a short horror tale told by one voice over dark pictures. It starts in a place everyone knows, a gas station, a hotel hallway, a bus at night, and then one detail is wrong. "Every night at 3:07, the hallway camera films a door we bricked up years ago."

From there the story follows a simple path: a rule or a warning, two or three steps where things get worse, a reveal you only half see, and a last line that stops right at the worst moment. Many creators end with "Part 2?" or with a choice for the comments, and the comments do the rest.

It hooks for one reason: the viewer needs to know what the wrong detail means. A good scary short never shows everything. What you do not see is scarier than any monster on screen, which is also why the best ones need no gore at all.

Scary story videos in November 2026: the real numbers

Horror is one of the biggest faceless niches. On YouTube, His Story has 7.53 million subscribers, Mr. Nightmare has 7.16 million and LIGHTS ARE OFF has 5.62 million (read November 2, 2026).

The single posts are huge too. LIGHTS ARE OFF's 15-second short "I think it's safe to swim here" has 54.5 million views. On TikTok, @chilltales63's animated horror story passed 24.1 million plays in one month, and it runs over five minutes.

The newest wave is the rules story with a choice. @inkwell.dilemmas opened in mid October 2026 and its "phone or the door?" story already has 9.39 million plays. On Instagram, @dontopenit.stories posted a night shift at a gas station in a blackout, where a sheriff asks you to open the door, and it reached 7.18 million views.

People search for this too: "creepypasta" gets 135,000 searches a month in the US and "scary stories" 49,500.

How to make a scary story video with AI

  1. Pick one ordinary place. A motel, a night bus, a ski lodge. The more normal it is, the harder the wrong detail hits.
  2. Write the wrong detail as line one. No intro, no "this story is about". Start inside the problem.
  3. Add a rule or a warning. "Do not answer" or "Never open the door after midnight" gives the viewer something to fear.
  4. Escalate two or three times, then reveal only half of the thing.
  5. Stop at the worst moment. End on a cliffhanger and ask for Part 2.
  6. Make it dark and slow. One calm voice, deep shadows, low music, a sound effect on each scare.

On MakeViral you only do step 1: type the place or the idea. The writer builds the rest in this order, draws every scene in the Dark look, adds night tags and alerts on screen, the narrator, captions, dark music and sound effects. You read the script first and can change any line before it renders. The whole video takes about 3 to 6 minutes.

How do creators make scary story videos by hand?

Most horror creators use four or five tools. In Money Degree's tutorial (547,679 views), the stack is ChatGPT for the story, Leonardo for the pictures, DupDub for the voice and Vexub to put the video together. Nitesh Nayak's tutorial (574,842 views) does the story, visuals, voice and edit with free tools and says it takes 30 minutes, which is the creator's own claim.

Two warnings come from the audience. On r/horror, a thread called "there is an Epidemic of AI Horror YouTubers" got 284 upvotes: viewers skip channels that feel mass produced. And r/nosleep once ran a week-long blackout against narrators who used writers' stories without permission.

So the stories must be your own, and they must be good. MakeViral writes a new story from your one line every time, in 29 languages, and you can still edit every word.

Is it safe, and what does it cost?

Our scary writer is adults only and never gory. No child or baby appears in a scary story, not even as a voice on a monitor. Danger happens to adults. Blood and monsters can exist in the story, but the writer never describes wounds or body parts, and a filter checks every idea you type. The fear comes from what you do not see.

A 60-second scary story costs 132 credits with some motion, the format's default. A 90-second story, the length that passes TikTok's one-minute rule, costs 186 credits. You can write the script first for 15 credits, and those credits come off the video price. The smallest buy is a $9.99 one-time pack of 100 credits, with no subscription.

To grow a horror channel, post often and keep each story new: a new place, a new rule, a new twist. YouTube does not pay for videos that repeat the same situation with the same outcome.

Getting paid

Can scary story videos make money?

  • YouTube pays Shorts creators who reach 1,000 subscribers and 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days, or 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in 12 months. source
  • Monetizing creators keep 45% of their allocated Shorts revenue, whether or not they used music. source
  • YouTube does not pay for "AI-generated content made with generic or unoriginal templates", or for characters "put in the same situation over and over again with the same outcome". New places, new rules and new twists keep a horror channel original. source
  • YouTube does not ask you to label "AI-generated animation within a fully animated video". Labeling alone does not limit reach or monetization. source
  • TikTok Creator Rewards pays only for original videos longer than one minute, and you must be 18 or older. Pick the 90-second length for TikTok. source
FAQ

Scary story video questions

Is there a free AI scary story video generator?
MakeViral has no free plan, and new accounts start with 0 credits. You can write the script first for 15 credits, read the whole story and edit it, and those credits come off the video price. A 60-second scary video costs 132 credits. The smallest buy is a $9.99 one-time pack of 100 credits, with no subscription.
What tools should I use to start an AI horror YouTube channel?
By hand, creators use a writer like ChatGPT, an image tool like Leonardo, a voice tool like DupDub and a video editor. On MakeViral one line gives you all of it: the story, the dark scenes, the narrator, captions, music and sound effects, in a 9:16 MP4 with no watermark. You still choose the ideas and check the script.
Which horror YouTube channels are AI?
From the outside you often cannot tell, and many viewers ask. YouTube asks creators to label realistic AI content, but not AI animation inside a fully animated video. What viewers dislike is not AI itself but channels that feel mass produced. A new story, a strong twist and a clear voice matter more than the tools.
How do I make an AI horror narration sound scary?
Use one low, calm voice and a slow pace. Write short sentences and leave room between them. Keep a quiet, dark music bed under the voice and put a sound effect on each scare. The scary format on MakeViral sets all of this by default: a calm narrator, dark music and sound effects timed to the story.
Can I narrate Reddit or nosleep stories on my channel?
Only with the writer's permission. In 2020, r/nosleep ran a week-long blackout against narrators who used stories without asking. The safe way is your own story. MakeViral writes a new story from your one-line idea every time, and you can also paste a story you wrote yourself.
How long should a horror story video be for TikTok payouts?
TikTok Creator Rewards pays only for original videos longer than one minute, so pick the 90-second length on MakeViral. The format's default is 60 seconds, which works well for YouTube Shorts and Reels. Some big TikTok horror accounts post animated stories of 4 to 6 minutes.
Is the scary story writer safe for kids?
The videos are made for adults, and the stories are about adults only. No child or baby is ever in danger or even appears in a scary story. The writer keeps it creepy but never gory: no wounds, no body parts, no torture. A filter checks every idea you type and stops the ones that break these rules.
Can the viewer choose how the story ends?
The scary format ends on a cliffhanger and asks "Part 2?", so the comments decide if you make the next part. If you want two choices on screen, like the gas station reel above, use the Choose your path format. It ends with a choice card, and the majority picks Part 2.
