The split face trend is the TikTok and Instagram trend where one black-and-white portrait joins the left half of your face to the right half of your mom's or dad's, straight down the middle. It answers "Do I look like my mom or dad?" at a glance. You need two photos: you and your parent.

How to make the Split Face Trend photo on MakeViral

Everything runs in the browser. No editing app, no prompt to write, no watermark.

  1. Add the two photos

Press "Create your own" and add you, face to the camera, then your mom, dad or family member, face to the camera. Add them in this order, because the order decides who is who in the scene. Take them with the camera or pick them from your library.

  2. Press Generate

The button shows the price. Nano Banana 2 puts your photos into the Split face scene and makes one 2K photo. You write no prompt.

  3. Download or share

The photo is ready in a few minutes as a 9:16 2K image. Download it, share it from your phone, turn it into a video, or find it later in your Library.

Which photo works best?

Use two photos with one face each: photo 1 is you (the left half), photo 2 is your mom, dad or the family member (the right half).

  • Face the camera straight on, head level, in even light. Two similar photos join best: about the same distance, both looking ahead.
  • Sharp and close, from the shoulders up. A passport-style photo is ideal.
  • No sunglasses, hats or hair over the eyes, so the eyes line up across the middle.
  • Color or old photos are fine. The result is black and white anyway. Photograph an old print flat, with no glare.
  • One person per photo. Crop a group photo first.
  • Use photos of people who are happy to be in it.

Where did the Split Face Trend trend start?

Split family faces are older than AI: in 2011, the Canadian photographer Ulric Collette's "Genetic Portraits" joined the halves of relatives' faces by hand. The AI version started in August 2026. On 7 August, an Instagram user posted color half-and-half portraits of herself with her mother and with her father, made with Meta's AI tool. Later that month, Russian-language how-to videos shared a couple version, a girl and a guy, as the тренд половина лица ("half face trend"), and a long prompt for ChatGPT went around in their comments.

The parent version took off in September. CapCut templates turned it into a short clip, and a how-to by @clzl3vnad2 from 8 September reached 4.8 million views. The prompt came back in English, word for word, now with "the girl and the woman". @idatravels05's "You look like your mom" post passed 779,900 views. US Google searches for "split face trend" went from almost none in August to 1,900 in September 2026, and Know Your Meme added the "Parent Split-Face / Family Resemblance Trend" on 17 September. In mid-October, new posts still go up every day.

Photo prompt

Create a photorealistic black and white portrait collage of the two uploaded images. Connect the faces of the person in the first image and the person in the second image strictly vertically in the center: the left half of the final face is half of the face of the person in the first image, the right half is half of the face of the person in the second image. It is very important to maintain as much as possible the real characteristics of both people in the original photos, not to change their appearance and not to make an average face. The faces should be perfectly aligned in the middle. The connecting line should run exactly through the middle of the forehead, nose, lips and chin. Special attention should be paid: both eyes were completely visible and each eye retained the shape, cut and characteristics of its person; the cut of the eyes and eyebrows corresponded as much as possible to the original photos; the nose was connected exactly in the middle, so that the shape of the nose, the bridge of the nose and both nostrils were clearly visible; the lips were very clear and distinct, while the left half of the lips corresponded to the person in the first image and the right belonged to the person in the second image; the shape of each person's upper and lower lips was preserved; the position of the eyes matched, nose, lips and chin to make the face look natural and symmetrical; do not mix features between halves and do not change the shape of the face. Take a large full-face portrait, one person looks directly into the camera, neutral expression. Black and white photo with high details of skin, eyes, eyelashes, eyebrows, lips and hair. Soft even studio lighting, light neutral background, high sharpness, realistic photographic texture, no filter and strong retouching. The result should look like a real professional photo, exactly divided into two halves between two people. Vertical 9:16, framed like a passport photo from the top of the head to the upper chest, the face large in the middle. Each half keeps its own person's hair, ear, neck and clothes on its side, at the same head size and eye level, each at the age in their own photo. If a photo is in color, old or turned to the side, show that person facing the camera in black and white with the same face. A clean, straight seam: no gap, no blur, no drawn line. Exactly one split face, nobody else. No text, no logos, no watermark, no border. The identity rules below apply to each half: the left half is the exact person from the first image, the right half the exact person from the second image, never a blend of the two.

How many credits does it cost?

You pay per photo in credits, and the create page shows the exact price on the Generate button before you spend anything. The one-tap price covers one 2K photo, charged once. One photo is 3 credits, so the smallest one-time pack that covers it is $9.99 for 100 credits, with no subscription. A smaller 1K photo costs less if you run the prompt by hand in AI Photo.

How to do the split face trend, step by step

This is the whole split face trend how-to:

  1. Press "Create your own". Add photo 1 (you) and photo 2 (your mom, dad or another family member).
  2. Press Generate. The button shows the price before you spend anything.
  3. Your split face portrait arrives in your Library as one 2K vertical picture (9:16) in black and white: the left half is you, the right half is them, joined through the forehead, the nose, the lips and the chin.
  4. Post it. Some posts show the split face first and a real photo of the two of you second, with a caption like "You look like your mom" or "She looks like her dad".

Since people also call it the half face trend, this is also how to do the half face trend. Want both parents? Run it twice, once with your mom and once with your dad, and post the two pictures as a carousel. That is the mom or dad trend in one post, and it answers "Who do I look like more, mom or dad?" for your friends.

How MakeViral makes it: your two photos go to Nano Banana 2, Google's image model, with the prompt the trend's creators shared (see below) and a face lock that keeps each half true to its own photo. The create page shows the exact price on the Generate button, and every run is a new take.

Which prompt does the split face trend use?

The split face trend prompt people copy is one long prompt written for ChatGPT. It started in August 2026 as a couple half face prompt in Russian, for "a girl and a guy". In September it came back in English with "the girl and the woman", posted word for word under the biggest how-to video, and it became the trending half face prompt people copy. @b.boggs, the second clip on this page, shared it as the one she used.

It asks for one photorealistic black-and-white portrait collage, with the faces joined strictly down the middle, through the forehead, nose, lips and chin; each eye keeping the shape of its own person; and, in its own words, "not to make an average face".

This template uses that same split face prompt. Only three things change: "the girl" and "the woman" become your first and second photo, a few lines add the trend's look (each half keeps its own hair and clothes, a passport-style frame, vertical 9:16), and a face lock keeps both halves true to the photos. You do not paste anything. Posts call the same AI prompt the half face photo prompt or the family resemblance prompt, and it is this text.

Split face, face merge or look-alike app: what is the difference?

Apps that combine faces or merge two faces blend two people into one new, average face, the way a future baby generator does. The split face trend does the opposite: a half and half face where each side stays one real person, so the family resemblance shows in the brow, the nose and the smile.

  • It is a split face portrait, not a morph: the left side is you, the right side your parent.
  • It is not a family resemblance checker or a family resemblance calculator: it gives no score. You and your friends judge it.
  • MakeViral is a split face image generator and photo maker on the web, so you need no split face app or family resemblance app: two photos in, one split face photo out, with no CapCut template and nothing to install.
  • "Split face filter" and "family resemblance filter" are what many people call the CapCut templates of the trend. This is the same look made from your own photos, so the family resemblance AI result keeps your real faces.

For a clip of your future child made from two parents' photos, see the AI baby generator.

What goes wrong, and how do you fix it?

ProblemFix
The two halves do not line upUse two photos that face the camera straight on, at about the same distance. A tilted head joins badly.
One half looks younger, or an eye looks biggerA common complaint about the chatbot versions: one commenter wrote that ChatGPT "made my nonnas eye a little bigger and made her younger looking". The face lock asks for each face exactly as in its photo; a sharper, closer photo helps most. Run it again.
The face looks blended, like a new personRun it again with clearer photos. The prompt asks for two halves, never an average face.
The line down the middle is soft, or one side is much brighterTwo photos with similar light help. Run it again.
The run failsSome photos get refused. The credits come back; try another photo.

Every run is a new take, so results differ.

FAQ

Split Face Trend trend questions

What is the split face trend?
It is a photo trend that took off in September 2026: one black-and-white portrait made of the left half of your face and the right half of a parent's, joined down the middle. People also call it the half face trend or the family resemblance trend, and post it with captions like "You look like your mom".
How does a split face show if I look like my mom or dad?
Because each half stays one real person, the parts you share line up across the middle: the brow, the eye shape, the nose, the smile. Make one with each parent and compare them side by side.
Can I do the split face trend in ChatGPT?
Yes, many people did it in ChatGPT, often after several tries; under the trend, commenters wrote that it "kept messing it up" or changed a face. Here you skip the chat: add two photos, and the template sends the trend's prompt with a face lock for both halves.
Is there a split face prompt for ChatGPT or a half face prompt for Gemini?
The prompt people share for the trend was written for ChatGPT. This template runs the same long text on Nano Banana 2, Google's AI image model, so you need neither app and write no prompt.
Is the look alike trend prompt the same?
Yes. The look alike trend is the same trend, so the prompt people paste under its how-to videos is the same text, and this template uses it.
What do people call the split face trend TikTok posts?
Names vary: the half face TikTok trend, the mom and dad trend or the do we look alike trend, often tagged #familyresemblance (4,544 videos on 14 October 2026). A template maker called it the look alike trend, and the captions are short: "You look like your mom", "She looks like her dad", "Me and my mom".
What is the split face trend called in other languages?
In Russian it spread as the "тренд половина лица". German captions say "Du ähnelst deiner Mutter" ("you look like your mother"). People searching in Portuguese type "trend metade do rosto", and in Turkish it is a "yarım yüz fotoğraf". It is the same trend everywhere.
Can I use my dad, a sibling, a partner or a friend?
Yes. Photo 2 can be anyone: your mom, your dad, a grandparent, a brother or sister, a partner or a best friend. Under the biggest how-to video, the most liked comment was "me and my mom" (3,631 likes), so mom and daughter posts lead the look alike trend, but "Me and my best friend" got 3,023 likes and "Me and brother" 1,280.
Can I make family resemblance photos with both parents in one picture?
Not in one picture: the trend joins two faces. Make one family resemblance picture with your mom and one with your dad, and post both together.
Can I make it with a parent who has passed away?
Yes. An old photo works: photograph the print flat, with no glare, and the face comes out in the same black and white as yours. It can be a quiet way to see what you carry of them.
Can I post it for the split face trend on Facebook or Instagram?
Yes. The half face AI photo is a normal 2K picture file, so you can post it on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, or send it to your family. Keep the platform's AI label on.
Why is the half face photo black and white?
That is the look of the trend, and it helps: black and white hides the differences in light and color between two photos taken years apart, so the line down the middle looks clean.
Can I turn it into a video?
Yes. Under your finished picture, press "Make it a video": it opens AI Video with the split face as the first frame, and you choose what happens. The video costs its own credits.
Does the split face trend cost credits?
Yes, a few. A picture costs far fewer credits than a video, the create page shows the exact price on the Generate button before you spend anything, and if a run fails, the credits come back.
Are my photos private?
Yes. MakeViral does not post your photos or the result anywhere or show them to other users. The picture goes to your private Library, and you can delete it there at any time.
