The Day of the Dead pet trend is a gentle way to remember a pet that died. One photo becomes a video of its first Día de Muertos: your dog or cat walks a glowing marigold path into the land of the dead, or runs across the marigold bridge back to you. You need one clear photo of your pet.

How to make the Day of the Dead Pet video on MakeViral

Everything runs in the browser. No editing app, no prompt to write, no watermark.

  1. Add your photo

Press "Create your own" and add your pet. Take it with the camera or pick it from your library.

  2. Press Generate

The button shows the price. Kling 3.0 Omni puts your photos into the Day of the Dead pet trend clip and copies it shot by shot for 10 seconds, with the reel's original song. You write no prompt.

  3. Download or share

The video is ready in a few minutes as a 9:16 MP4. Download it, share it from your phone, or find it later in your Library.

Which photo works best?

Use one clear photo of your pet, the one that looks most like them.

  • The whole body in view, standing or sitting. In the Land of the dead version your pet walks away from the camera into the city, so the body, the tail and the markings matter as much as the face.
  • A sharp face in good light, with the eyes visible.
  • One pet per photo. With two pets in one photo the AI may mix them, so crop the photo first.
  • Clothes, hats and harnesses can stay in the video. Pick a photo without them if you do not want them.
  • An older photo is fine. A phone photo of a printed photo works too, if it is sharp.
  • Any pet: the prompts work for a dog, a cat or another animal.

Where did the Day of the Dead Pet trend start?

In Mexico, families remember their dead on 1 and 2 November with an ofrenda: an altar with photos, candles, food and orange cempasúchil (marigold) petals that guide the souls home. Many families now make a place on the altar for their pets too, and 27 October has become the unofficial day when pets come back to visit.

The AI version started on 29 September 2025, when @alemerinoj showed how she made a video of her dogs crossing a bridge of marigolds with Google's Gemini, and shared both of her prompts in the caption. Mexican outlets printed her prompts in late October, and her post had 1.5 million views a year later. On 24 October 2025 @petmemoriesai posted a dog on the marigold bridge with the words "This is his first Day of the Dead, don't leave him behind". It reached 10.1 million views and 754,600 likes.

The trend came back in October 2026 as a CapCut template in a 3D animated film look: a skeleton officer at the gate of the land of the dead finds the pet's photo on its family's altar and lets it in. Three days after the first posts, its sound was in 1,209 videos.

Video prompt

Replace the dog in the video with the pet in the first image. The grey shaggy dog from the video must not appear in any frame. The pet that trots along the glowing marigold path to the crystal gate, waits at the skeleton officer's glass desk and then walks on into the glowing city is the pet in the first image, whether it is a dog, a cat or another animal: the same species and breed, face, eyes, ears, muzzle, fur colors, fur length, markings and size as in the first image, in the same warm 3D animated film style as the rest of the video. The framed photo on the officer's glowing screen also shows the pet from the first image. Timing, second by second, as in the original video: 0-2.5 s: the pet trots along a winding path of glowing marigold petals toward a gate of tall glowing crystals, past a few townspeople in festive clothes, and stops at the glass desk of a friendly skeleton officer in a blue uniform and a blue cap. 2.5-4.9 s: close on the officer: he taps on a glowing glass pad on his desk, then looks up with wide eyes. 4.9-6.2 s: close-up of his glowing screen: a framed photo of the pet on a Day of the Dead altar with orange marigolds, purple flowers and lit candles. 6.2-8 s: the officer smiles warmly at the pet in front of his desk and opens one hand toward the city to wave it through. 8-10 s: the pet walks on past the desk and down a glowing street of towers, balconies, lanterns and marigolds at dusk, toward a warm light, and grows small in the distance. The pet keeps its own look from the first image in every frame, also from behind and in the framed photo, with the natural body volume and proportions of that animal: never flattened, squashed, stretched or merged with anything. No party hat, no backpack and no blue bandana unless the first image shows them. The skeleton officer, the crystal gate, the marigold path and the city stay as in the video. One pet only. No new text, no logos, no watermark.

Step 2 · Video prompt

Turn this photo into a video, please. The pet is running over the bridge of flowers, coming toward the viewer. And animate the fireworks, please. Keep the animal's species, face, fur, markings and size and the marigold bridge exactly as in the image. Audio: a soft, warm original instrumental tune on a gentle guitar, the distant crackle and pops of the fireworks and light paws on the petals; no singing, no speech, no barking. Exactly one animal, no people. One continuous shot, no cuts, no extra animals, no extra legs, no morphing. No text, no subtitles, no logos, no watermark.

How many credits does it cost?

You pay per video in credits, and the create page shows the exact price on the Generate button before you spend anything. The one-tap price covers the video, made in one step from your photos and the trend clip, charged once. One video is 40 credits, so the smallest one-time pack that covers it is $9.99 for 100 credits, with no subscription. The cheaper models are there if you run the prompts by hand in AI Video.

Two ways to make your pet's first Día de Muertos

Land of the dead (the default) is the 2026 CapCut template, in a warm 3D animated film look. Your clip follows its 10 seconds:

SecondsWhat happens
0 to 2.5Your pet trots along a winding path of glowing marigold petals toward a gate of tall crystals, past townspeople in festive clothes.
2.5 to 5It waits at the glass desk of a friendly skeleton officer in a blue uniform, who taps on a glowing pad and looks up.
5 to 6His screen shows your pet's photo on an altar of marigolds, purple flowers and candles.
6 to 8The officer smiles at your pet and waves it through.
8 to 10Your pet walks on into the glowing city at dusk, until it is small in the distance.

Kling 3.0 Omni edits the template clip itself, so the path, the gate, the officer and the city stay, and your pet comes in, in the same animated look. The clip is vertical 9:16 at 720p and comes with the template's sound. Best runs the same clip on Seedance 2.5, for more credits.

Marigold bridge is the 2025 original, in a lifelike look, made in two steps as its creator made it. First Nano Banana 2 makes a photo of your pet on a bridge of marigolds decorated for the Day of the Dead, with fireworks behind it, using @alemerinoj's own Gemini prompt word for word. Then Kling 3.0 (Standard) or Seedance 2.5 (Best) turns that photo into an 8-second video of your pet running across the bridge toward you, with the fireworks going off and soft music.

The exact price of each shows on the Generate button before you spend anything. You write no prompt, and the video waits in your Library when it is ready.

How to make an ofrenda for your pet

An ofrenda is the home altar of the Day of the Dead. In Mexico it is said that pets come back to visit on 27 October and leave on the morning of the 28th, so many families set up a small altar just for them. In the US, Google searches for "ofrenda for pets" reached about 40,500 in October 2025, and for "pet ofrenda" about 27,100.

What a pet ofrenda usually has, as El Imparcial listed it in October 2025:

  • A photo of your pet in the center.
  • Candles to light the way home.
  • Marigold (cempasúchil) flowers, often with a little path of petals up to the altar.
  • Water and their favorite food or treats, for the long trip.
  • A toy, the collar or the name tag, and a small blanket or cushion to rest on.
  • A short letter with a few words of love or thanks.

Your video can be part of it: play it for the family at the altar, or post it on 27 October with a photo of the ofrenda you made.

How to share it, gently

These videos are about love and loss, and the comments under the trend's posts are full of people naming the pets they miss. A few things help:

  • Write a line about your pet: their name, when they left, what they loved. The trend's best-known line is "Este es su primer día de muertos, no me lo vayan a dejar atrás" ("This is his first Day of the Dead, don't leave him behind"). Other common lines are "Ya vienen en camino" ("They're on their way") and "Te espero en casa" ("I'll wait for you at home").
  • Tell your family first if the pet was theirs too. Some people find the video comforting, and others need more time.
  • Keep the platform's AI label on. The video is an AI creation, not a memory.

Hashtags (TikTok, 14 October 2026): #diademuertosmascotas (12,281 videos, 164.6 million views) and #dayofthedead (240,354 videos). Sound: the Land of the dead version comes with the template clip's own sound, which you can turn off on the result screen; the Marigold bridge version has soft original music. Sounds you add when you post belong to their owners.

FAQ

Day of the Dead Pet trend questions

What is the Day of the Dead pet trend?
It is a way to remember a pet that died, which started in Mexico in 2025. People turn a photo of their dog or cat into a short video of its first Día de Muertos: the pet crosses a bridge of marigold petals, or walks through the gate into a glowing land of the dead. The posts often say it is the pet's first Day of the Dead and ask the others not to leave it behind.
How do I make a Day of the Dead video of my pet?
Press "Create your own", pick Land of the dead or Marigold bridge, add one clear photo of your pet and press Generate. The button shows the price first. You get a vertical video of 10 seconds (Land of the dead) or 8 seconds (Marigold bridge), and it waits in your Library when it is ready.
When is the Day of the Dead for pets?
In Mexico, 27 October has become the unofficial day for pets: it is said that they come back to visit that day and leave on the morning of the 28th. The Day of the Dead itself is on 1 and 2 November.
What is the marigold bridge?
In this trend it is the path a pet takes between the land of the dead and the home of its family, covered in orange cempasúchil (marigold) petals. Marigolds are the flower of the Day of the Dead: their color and scent are said to guide the souls, and families often lay a little path of petals up to the ofrenda.
Which prompt does this template use?
Marigold bridge uses the prompts of the trend's first creator, @alemerinoj, who shared them with her video on 29 September 2025: the photo prompt word for word in her Spanish, and the video prompt in English, in the same order. The Land of the dead template on CapCut is closed and nobody shared its prompt, so that version edits the template clip itself with a description of its shots, second by second.
Is the video animated or realistic?
Land of the dead is in a warm 3D animated film look, like the CapCut template. Marigold bridge is lifelike, because the original prompt asks for the same pet as in the photos and no illustration.
Can I use a photo of my cat or another pet?
Yes. The prompts work for a dog, a cat or another animal: your pet takes the place of the dog in the clip, or of the dog in the original prompt. Use a photo with the whole body in view.
How long is the video, and does it have sound?
Land of the dead is 10 seconds with the template clip's own sound, which you can turn off on the result screen. Marigold bridge is 8 seconds with soft original music and the sound of the fireworks. Both are vertical 9:16 MP4s with no watermark.
Does the Day of the Dead pet video cost credits?
Yes. Each video costs credits, and the create page shows the exact price on the Generate button before you spend anything. Standard costs less than Best. If a video fails, the credits come back.
Is my pet's photo private?
Yes. MakeViral does not post your photo or the result anywhere or show it to other users. The video goes to your private Library, and you can delete it there at any time.
