Watch time is the total amount of time viewers have spent watching your videos, reported in hours, and it is the figure YouTube uses for Partner Program eligibility.
YouTube defines watch time simply as "the amount of time viewers have watched your video" (YouTube Help, checked September 2026). It is a total, not an average, so it grows with both length and view count.
Watch time is one half of the monetization threshold. As of September 2026, the long-form route into the YouTube Partner Program is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months (YouTube Help). From 1 February 2027, YouTube has announced that the entry benchmark for new creators becomes 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days; existing members are not affected (YouTube Blog).
Note the wording. Qualified public watch hours means public videos. Private, unlisted and deleted videos do not count, and neither do ad watch time or Shorts feed views on the long-form path.
Shorts do not accumulate watch hours toward the long-form threshold. The Shorts route uses a view count instead, which is why a channel with millions of Shorts views can still sit below the watch-hour bar.
Total watch time is views multiplied by average view duration. Both matter, but duration is the lever you control from the edit: a stronger hook, tighter pacing and a payoff that arrives before people leave.
See YouTube automation for how faceless channels build watch time without appearing on camera.
Average view duration is the average number of minutes watched per view, calculated by dividing total watch time by the number of views, and reported by YouTube from engaged views.
