Average view duration

YouTube describes average view duration as "average minutes watched among those who stayed to watch", calculated "from engaged views and their corresponding watch time" (YouTube Help, checked September 2026).

It is the per-video companion to watch time. Watch time tells you the total. Average view duration tells you how long a typical viewer lasted.

Why the raw number means nothing on its own

Forty seconds is excellent on a 45-second Short and poor on a 10-minute video. Always read it alongside length, which is what retention rate does by expressing it as a percentage.

A short video with a high percentage and a long video with a low percentage can produce identical average view duration and completely different outcomes, because the platform weighs the share of the video watched, not just the seconds.

Reading it as a diagnosis

• Low AVD, high impressions. The thumbnail or hook promised something the video did not deliver.
• AVD close to the full length. The video is probably too short for the subject. Try a longer version.
• AVD stuck at the same figure across videos. That is usually a pacing habit, not a topic problem. Look for where every video slows down.
