Shadowban

Definition

A shadowban is a creator term for a suspected drop in reach that happens without any notification, where posts still publish normally but are shown to far fewer people than usual.

The word is not a platform term. It is a name creators gave to an experience: views collapse, nothing was removed, and no message arrived. What platforms publish instead are eligibility rules for their recommendation feeds.

What platforms actually say

TikTok publishes For You feed eligibility standards as part of its Community Guidelines, describing content that can stay on your profile but will not be recommended in the feed (TikTok Community Guidelines). YouTube applies its channel monetization and Community Guidelines policies the same way. In both cases, reduced distribution is a documented outcome, not a secret one.

What usually causes a reach collapse

  • Content that fails feed eligibility. Borderline topics, unverified claims, and material aimed at minors are the usual categories.
  • Copyrighted audio or footage. A claimed sound can quietly cap distribution.
  • Reused content. Reuploads and mass-produced near-identical videos.
  • Spam patterns. Follow-for-follow loops, comment automation, engagement pods.
  • Nothing at all. Reach varies enormously by video. Three weak videos in a row look identical to a penalty from the inside.

How to check before assuming

Open the per-video analytics. TikTok shows a reason when a video is not eligible for the For You feed, and it can be appealed. If there is no flag, treat it as a content problem: check the hook and the retention rate curve on the videos that stalled.

Deleting the account and starting again rarely helps. Posting something genuinely better usually does. See how to go viral on TikTok.

FAQ

Questions about shadowban

Is shadowbanning real on TikTok?
Reduced distribution is real and documented: TikTok publishes For You feed eligibility standards and shows a reason in a video's analytics when it is not eligible. What is not real is a hidden, unappealable penalty applied without any signal. Check the video's analytics before assuming.
How do I know if I am shadowbanned?
Open per-video analytics and look for an eligibility notice. If the video is eligible and still flat, the reach drop is a content result, not a penalty. Compare the retention curve against your videos that performed, and look at the first two seconds first.
How long does a shadowban last?
There is no published duration, because there is no published penalty by that name. When a specific video is ineligible for the feed, the restriction applies to that video and can be appealed. Account-level restrictions come with a notice and an appeal route.
