You can earn from YouTube Shorts in seven ways: ad revenue from the Shorts Feed, affiliate links, sponsorships, your own products, channel memberships, Super Thanks and traffic you send to long-form videos. Ad revenue is the smallest of the seven at roughly $0.01 to $0.07 per 1,000 views. The other six have no view rate at all.

Which YouTube Shorts income paths actually pay?

Ranked by what a new faceless channel can realistically bank in its first six months. All platform thresholds below were checked on September 15, 2026 on YouTube's own help pages.

The sponsorship range is from Soundstripe's creator pay roundup, updated August 12, 2026, which puts creators with 10,000 to 100,000 followers at $100 to $1,000 per sponsored post. Loopex Digital's Shorts statistics roundup, updated May 13, 2026, reports that only 8% of Shorts creators rely on ads as their main income (source). The ranking above is what the other 92% are doing.

How much does Shorts ad revenue really pay?

Shorts ad money comes from a pool, not from ads on your video. YouTube pools the ad revenue that runs between Shorts each month, takes out music licensing by track count, allocates the rest by each creator's share of engaged views in each country, and then pays the creator 45% of that allocation (Shorts monetization policies).

At the reported range, that arithmetic is brutal:

ViewsAt $0.01 RPMAt $0.04 RPMAt $0.08 RPM
100,000$1$4$8
1,000,000$10$40$80

The full breakdown, including the February 1, 2027 rule change that makes 10 million qualified Shorts views a monthly requirement, is in the YouTube Shorts monetization guide.

There is a second reason not to build a business on that line. From February 1, 2027, a channel needs at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in every rolling 90 days to earn Shorts ad revenue and Premium revenue for that month, per the Shorts monetization policies, checked September 15, 2026. The count is measured over the 90 days ending on the 15th of the month before the earnings month.

For a small channel that means roughly 110,000 Shorts views a day, every day, just to keep the ad line switched on. Below it, you stay in the Partner Program, you keep earning from long-form, memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping, and Shorts revenue sharing resumes automatically once you cross 10 million again. In other words, ad revenue is the one income path on this page that YouTube can turn off for a quiet quarter. The other six it cannot.

One change helps: from the same date, Shorts ads targeted to small groups of 5 or fewer channels pay the creator 45% of that ad's net revenue directly, on top of the Creator Pool. That favors channels a sponsor asks for by name, which is another argument for a clear niche.

Why is affiliate income the fastest money for a faceless channel?

Because it has no threshold. An affiliate link works on your first video, and it pays per buyer instead of per view. One $30 commission is worth 750,000 Shorts views at $0.04 RPM.

Three routes that work without a face:

  • YouTube Shopping affiliate. Tag products inside the video itself. Eligibility is YPP membership, more than 10,000 subscribers, and a supported country, per the Shopping affiliate page.
  • A pinned comment and a link in the description. No threshold at all. Works from video one on any affiliate network.
  • One landing page. Send every Short to one page with the two or three products you actually recommend, so you never rewrite descriptions.

The niche decides the money. A Shorts channel about phone accessories, budget software, kitchen gear or study tools has something to link. A pure meme channel does not, which is why meme channels with huge view counts often earn less than small review channels.

When do sponsorships start paying?

Brands buy audience, not subscriber count, so the trigger is a clear niche more than a number. In practice, faceless channels start getting offers around 10,000 subscribers if the niche is commercial.

Two things make a faceless channel sponsorable:

  1. A stable format. A brand needs to know what the next video looks like. A channel that posts Reddit stories every day is easier to buy than one that posts anything.
  2. A visible contact route. An email in the channel description is enough.

Price the first deals low and in cash, not product. A 30-second read inside a Short is the usual unit.

What can you sell yourself?

The highest margin on this list, and the only one nobody can take away. For a faceless Shorts channel the sellable things are usually:

  • A template pack or preset that matches the visual style people already like.
  • A short course or guide in the niche the channel teaches.
  • A paid newsletter or community for a niche with ongoing questions.
  • Print on demand, if the channel has a catchphrase people repeat.

You need very few buyers. A $25 product bought by 40 people a month is $1,000, which is 25 million Shorts views at $0.04 RPM.

How do channel memberships and Super Thanks work on Shorts?

These are the fan funding tier, and they open earlier than ad revenue.

  • Channel memberships need 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified long-form watch hours in 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.
  • Super Thanks has no subscriber threshold of its own. You need to be 18 or older, live in a supported country, and accept the Commerce Product Module. It works on Shorts as well as long-form: the viewer buys an animation and gets a highlighted comment. Viewers can spend up to $500 a day or $2,000 a week across Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and Gifts combined (YouTube Help).

Faceless channels convert worse here than personality channels, because people tip a person. Treat both as a bonus, not a plan.

Why should you push Shorts viewers to long-form?

Because the revenue share is better and the RPM is an order of magnitude higher. On long-form, the creator keeps 55% of the ad revenue on their own video. On Shorts, the creator keeps 45% of a slice of a shared pool that music licensing has already taken from.

The same gap now exists in subscription revenue. In the August 10, 2026 update, YouTube said Premium Lite revenue is pooled at 60% of net subscription revenue, then distributed to creators at 55% for long-form videos and 45% for Shorts.

Practical version: make the Short the trailer. Take the same script, make a five to eight minute version of it, and point to it in the pinned comment and the end of the Short. Shorts views do not count toward the 4,000 watch hours, but the viewers they send to long-form do.

What is the 60-day plan?

  1. Days 1 to 3: pick one niche and one format. Choose a niche with something to sell, and one format you can repeat. Reddit stories, AI voiceover explainers and quiz Shorts are the three that scale without a camera.
  2. Days 4 to 7: build the first batch. Write or generate 20 scripts, then produce 20 Shorts in one sitting. Bulk generation is the whole point: one session should cover two weeks of posting.
  3. Days 8 to 30: post daily and read retention. Post one Short a day at the same time. In YouTube Studio, open the audience retention graph on each one and note where the drop happens. Almost always it is the first two seconds.
  4. Days 14 to 30: add the money layer. Put one affiliate link in every description and one pinned comment. Do this before you are monetized, not after.
  5. Days 31 to 45: double down on the winner. Take your top three Shorts and make ten variations of each. Variation beats novelty on Shorts, because the feed tests each one against a fresh audience.
  6. Days 46 to 60: add long-form and apply. Publish two long-form videos built from your best Shorts scripts. Open YouTube Studio, click Earn, and select Get notified so YouTube emails you the moment you cross a threshold.

Budget check before you start: MakeViral's Starter plan is $49.99 a month for 500 credits and the Pro plan is $199.99 a month for 3,000 credits, checked on the pricing page on September 15, 2026. New accounts start with no credits, so the first batch is a paid batch. Price that against the hours a manual edit of 20 Shorts would take.

Which tools make daily posting possible?

The bottleneck is production, not ideas. MakeViral takes a prompt, a script or a product URL and returns a 9:16 video with an AI script, an AI voiceover, timed captions and a background, in the browser, with no editing software. It ships eight formats, and these three carry most faceless Shorts channels:

Everything else lives on the faceless video generator hub.

AI voiceover videos

TikTok Voice Generator for AI Voiceover Videos

The narrator-over-gameplay format: a written script becomes a voiced, captioned vertical video with a background clip, in one pass.

How do you get the first 1,000 subscribers from Shorts?

Shorts convert viewers to subscribers badly, because the feed is built for the next video, not for your channel. Three things move the number.

  1. Ask once, at the payoff. Say the ask after the punchline, not before it. A caption at the end beats a voiceover interruption in the middle.
  2. Run a series, not singles. Number the videos. "Part 7" gives a reason to subscribe that a standalone Short never gives.
  3. Keep the channel page consistent. A viewer who taps your avatar decides in two seconds. Twenty Shorts in the same format with the same thumbnail style reads as a channel. Twenty different formats read as a test account.

Volume is the other half. Posting once a day for 60 days gives the algorithm 60 chances to find an audience, and a single Short that lands can carry a channel past 1,000 subscribers in a week. That is why batch production matters more than any single video.

When does YouTube actually pay the money out?

Later than most creators expect. The partner earnings overview, checked September 15, 2026, sets the timetable:

  • Last month's earnings appear in your AdSense for YouTube balance between the 7th and the 12th of the current month.
  • They are paid out by the 21st to the 26th, if the balance has reached the payment threshold and there are no payment holds.
  • The threshold is $100 in the United States, with local equivalents such as £60 or €70.

So June earnings show up in mid-July and reach your bank in late July. Anything under the threshold rolls forward instead of expiring. Affiliate networks and sponsors usually pay faster, which is another reason not to wait for YPP before you add an offer.

What mistakes kill Shorts income?

  • Reuploading other people's clips. Non-original Shorts, reuploads and compilations with nothing added are ineligible for revenue sharing. This is the single most common reason an automated channel earns zero.
  • Forgetting the Shorts Monetization Module. Shorts revenue sharing only applies from the date you accept it in YouTube Studio. Views before that date never pay.
  • Adding music by reflex. One track sends half of that Short's revenue to music licensing. Two tracks send two thirds.
  • Chasing view count instead of country mix. RPM follows advertiser demand per country, so a million views in a low-CPM market pays a fraction of a million views in the United States.
  • Waiting for monetization before adding an offer. Every view before approval earns nothing unless there is a link in the description.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much does YouTube pay for 1,000 views on Shorts?
Roughly one to eight cents from ads. Trackers checked in September 2026 report Shorts RPM between about $0.01 and $0.07 per 1,000 views. Affiliate links and your own products are what turn 1,000 views into real money, because they pay per buyer instead of per view.
How many views to make $100 on YouTube Shorts?
From ads alone, about 1.3 to 10 million views, depending on your RPM. At $0.04 per 1,000 views you need roughly 2.5 million. With one affiliate offer converting at even 0.1% on a $30 commission, 100,000 views can pay the same $100.
Can you make money on YouTube Shorts without 1,000 subscribers?
Yes, but not from YouTube. Affiliate links, sponsorships and your own products have no subscriber threshold, so they work from your first video. YouTube ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers plus the watch hours or Shorts views threshold, and channel memberships need 500 subscribers.
Do you need to show your face to make money on Shorts?
No. YouTube's monetization policies care about original content, not whether a face appears. A Reddit story you script, voice and caption yourself is original. Reuploading other people's clips is what breaks the rules, with or without a face.
Is it better to post Shorts or long-form videos for money?
Both, in that order. Shorts win reach cheaply and long-form wins revenue per view, because long-form creators keep 55% of ad revenue on their own video while Shorts creators keep 45% of a slice of a shared pool. Use Shorts as the funnel and long-form as the earner.
How long does it take to make money on YouTube Shorts?
Plan on three to six months to clear the YouTube Partner Program thresholds with daily posting, then another month before the first payout, because earnings land in AdSense between the 7th and 12th and pay out by the 21st to 26th once you pass $100.
