What happens in the I put my heart in this meme, second by second?
You take the place of the young man in the original street interview. The street, the camera and every move come from the clip; the sound is the clip's own:
| Time | What you do | What you hear |
|---|---|---|
| 0-3 s | The interviewer holds out a phone with the question. You look down at it, unsure. | "And what continent is New Zealand in?" |
| 3-4 s | You take the microphone out of the interviewer's hand. | A short pause. |
| 4-7 s | Mic up, calm face, you start to sing and hold up one open hand. | "I put my heart in this. Why does everyone think they're the hardest?" |
| 7-10 s | You keep going, eyes on the camera, with slow hand moves. | "Why do you speak for the sake of speaking? Don't even know what you're trying to describe." |
| 10-12 s | You press one hand down twice to calm everyone. | "Honey, calm down, calm down." |
The sound goes back on after the run, so your mouth follows the original clip. In practice it reads as you singing the lines.
Why does it work? Everyone has blanked on a question in class. Answering with your own song, with a straight face, is the confidence move people wish they had. That is why the top comments are "the way he snatched the mic" and "Honey calm down calm down".
