**Definition:** Watch time is the total amount of time viewers have spent watching your videos, reported in hours, and it is the figure YouTube uses for Partner Program eligibility.

YouTube defines watch time simply as "the amount of time viewers have watched your video" ([YouTube Help, checked September 2026](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9314415)). It is a total, not an average, so it grows with both length and view count.

## Why it is the gatekeeper metric

Watch time is one half of the monetization threshold. As of September 2026, the long-form route into the YouTube Partner Program is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months ([YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72851)). From 1 February 2027, YouTube has announced that the entry benchmark for new creators becomes 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days; existing members are not affected ([YouTube Blog](https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/youtube-partner-program-updates-2027-new-opportunities-earn/)).

Note the wording. Qualified public watch hours means public videos. Private, unlisted and deleted videos do not count, and neither do ad watch time or Shorts feed views on the long-form path.

## Watch time and Shorts

Shorts do not accumulate watch hours toward the long-form threshold. The Shorts route uses a view count instead, which is why a channel with millions of Shorts views can still sit below the watch-hour bar.

## How to grow it

Total watch time is views multiplied by [average view duration](https://www.makeviral.ai/glossary/average-view-duration). Both matter, but duration is the lever you control from the edit: a stronger [hook](https://www.makeviral.ai/glossary/hook), tighter pacing and a payoff that arrives before people leave.

## Questions about watch time

### How many watch hours do I need to monetize on YouTube?

As of September 2026 it is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. YouTube has announced that from 1 February 2027 new applicants will need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views.

### Do Shorts count toward watch hours?

Not toward the 4,000-hour long-form threshold. Shorts have their own route based on qualified Shorts views over 90 days. A channel that posts only Shorts reaches the Partner Program through the view path, not the watch-hour path.

### Does rewatching my own video count?

Views from your own account add almost nothing and can be filtered as invalid traffic. Buying views or running traffic through automated tools is worse, because YouTube removes that watch time and the application can fail on invalid traffic grounds.
