**Definition:** 9:16 is the vertical aspect ratio used by TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, nine units wide for every sixteen units tall, most commonly exported at 1080 by 1920 pixels.

A phone held upright is roughly 9:16, so a video in that shape fills the screen with no black bars and no letterboxing. Every short-form feed is built around it, and anything else gets padded, cropped or shown small.

## The numbers that matter

- **1080 by 1920 pixels** is the standard export. It is 9:16 exactly and matches what the apps display.
- TikTok's ads help lists the recommended vertical format as 9:16 at **540 by 960 pixels or larger** ([TikTok Ads Manager, checked September 2026](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/tiktok-auction-in-feed-ads)).
- YouTube states that Shorts can be uploaded at a **maximum resolution of 1080p** and can run **up to 3 minutes** ([YouTube Help, checked September 2026](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10059070)).

Exporting larger than 1080 by 1920 does not improve what viewers see, because the platform re-encodes it down. It only makes the upload slower.

## What goes wrong

Square or 4:5 video uploaded to a vertical feed gets bars or an auto-crop, and the auto-crop usually cuts the top of a caption. Landscape footage placed in a 9:16 frame leaves two thirds of the screen empty, which is why creators fill it with a second layer. See [split-screen video](https://www.makeviral.ai/glossary/split-screen-video).

Filling the frame is not the same as using it. The interface covers part of it regardless of resolution, so check [safe zones](https://www.makeviral.ai/glossary/safe-zones) before deciding where text sits.

MakeViral renders every format at 9:16 and downloads as an MP4 ready to post. See the [AI Shorts generator](https://www.makeviral.ai/tools/ai-shorts-generator).

## Questions about 9:16 aspect ratio

### What resolution is 9:16?

1080 by 1920 pixels is the standard, and it is what almost every short-form export uses. 720 by 1280 is the same ratio at lower quality. TikTok's ad specs accept 540 by 960 and larger, but 1080 by 1920 is what you want for anything you intend to keep posting.

### Can I post a square video to TikTok or Shorts?

You can, but it will not fill the screen. The feed either adds bars around it or crops it to fit, and an auto-crop often removes the top or bottom of your text. Export at 9:16 and place the content yourself instead of letting the platform decide.

### Is 9:16 the same on TikTok, Reels and Shorts?

The ratio is the same on all three, so one export works everywhere. What differs is the interface drawn on top, so the same file can have readable text on one platform and covered text on another. Check the layout against each platform's safe area.

- [Safe zones](https://www.makeviral.ai/glossary/safe-zones): Safe zones are the areas of a vertical video frame that the app's own interface does not cover, so any text placed outside them is hidden behind the caption, the username, the buttons or the progress bar.
- [Split-screen video](https://www.makeviral.ai/glossary/split-screen-video): A split-screen video divides the vertical frame into two stacked halves: the story, chat thread or talking clip on top, and unrelated gameplay or satisfying footage underneath, so there is always something moving.
