*What Shorts monetization needs in 2026, what the Creator Pool pays per 1,000 views, and what changes on February 1, 2027. Start your channel today.* (14 min read)

Part of the guide: [Faceless YouTube Channel: How to Start One in 2026](https://www.makeviral.ai/blog/faceless-youtube-channel).

YouTube Shorts pays through the Shorts Feed ad pool. You need 1,000 subscribers
plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or 4,000 long-form watch
hours in 365 days, to join the Partner Program. Creators keep 45% of their
allocated Shorts revenue. Reported RPM runs about $0.01 to $0.07 per 1,000
views, checked September 2026.

> **YouTube Shorts payout calculator** (interactive on the web page): 1,000,000 views at $0.04 RPM per 1,000 views = about $40.00. Formula: views / 1,000 x RPM. Shorts RPM is typically $0.03-$0.08 per 1,000 views, and it moves with your niche, your country mix and the season. This is an estimate, not a promise.

## What are the YouTube Shorts monetization requirements in 2026?

There are two doors into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), and Shorts opens
both of them. The table below is from the
[YouTube Help page on how to earn money](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72857),
checked on September 15, 2026.

| Feature | Subscribers | Views or watch time | Other |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ad revenue (Shorts and long-form) | 1,000 | 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours in 365 days **or** 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days | 18 or older, or a guardian over 18 on the AdSense account |
| Channel memberships | 500 | 3,000 qualified long-form watch hours in 365 days **or** 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days | 3 public uploads in the last 90 days |
| Super Thanks | No threshold of its own | None | 18 or older, available country, Commerce Product Module accepted |
| Shopping (affiliate) | More than 10,000 | None | In YPP, in a supported country, not a music channel |

Two details matter more than the numbers.

First, the 10 million Shorts views must be **qualified**, and they are counted
over a rolling 90 days. A channel that posts 60 Shorts a month at 150,000 views
each clears it. A channel with one 12-million-view Short from last year does
not.

Second, the 500-subscriber tier is real money for a small channel. Channel
memberships and Super Thanks unlock there, and
[Super Thanks works on Shorts](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72857),
not only long-form videos.

You also need 2-Step Verification on your Google Account, no active Community
Guidelines strikes, and one active AdSense for YouTube account, per the
[YPP overview and eligibility page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12475004).

## What changes for Shorts monetization on February 1, 2027?

This is the part most 2026 guides still miss. On August 10, 2026 YouTube
announced the
[first significant YPP changes since 2018](https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/youtube-partner-program-updates-2027-new-opportunities-earn/).
Three of them hit Shorts creators directly.

| Change | Before | From February 1, 2027 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Monthly Shorts ad and Premium revenue | Any monetizing partner who accepted the Shorts module | Needs 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days |
| New YPP applicants (ads and Premium) | 4,000 watch hours in 365 days or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days | 8,000 watch hours in 365 days or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days |
| Premium Lite | Limited countries | All countries where YouTube Premium is sold |

Read the small print carefully, because it is friendlier than the headline.

- The new entry thresholds apply to **new applicants only**. YouTube says the
update "won't impact creators already in YPP", so getting in before February
1, 2027 locks in the easier door.
- A channel that drops below 10 million Shorts views stays in YPP and keeps
earning on long-form. Shorts revenue sharing "automatically" resumes once it
  crosses 10 million again.
- The 10 million count is measured "over the 90 day period ending on the 15th
day of the calendar month preceding the month for which earnings are being
  calculated", per the
  [Shorts monetization policies](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12504220).
- Fan funding and shopping entry thresholds do not change.

Say the Shorts rule plainly, because it is the one that changes how a small
channel plans 2027: **from February 1, 2027 you need at least 10 million
qualified Shorts views in every rolling 90 days to earn Shorts ad revenue and
Premium revenue for that month.** It is no longer a one-time entry test. It is
a monthly qualifier you have to keep hitting.

What that means if you are small:

- 10 million views in 90 days is roughly **110,000 Shorts views a day**, every
day. One Short a day at 110,000 views, or three a day at 37,000 each.
- Miss it and you do not lose your channel or your Partner Program membership.
You keep earning on long-form, memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping, and
Shorts revenue sharing resumes automatically the month you cross 10 million
  again.
- A channel that earns mostly from affiliate links, sponsors or its own product
is barely affected, because none of those depend on the Creator Pool.
- The plan for a small channel is therefore the same as before, only more so:
treat Shorts as reach, and put the money somewhere Shorts view counts cannot
  switch off.

YouTube also said it will add new ways to earn for channels under the
threshold: bonuses for YouTube Shopping, incentives for brand deals, and
earnings boosts for starting and growing trends. Details were not published as
of September 15, 2026.

One change goes the other way. From February 1, 2027, Shorts ads targeted to
specific channels in small groups of **5 or fewer channels** will earn direct
revenue, and creators keep **45% of the net revenue from that specific ad**, on
top of their Creator Pool allocation
([Shorts monetization policies](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12504220)).
That is the first Shorts placement that pays a channel directly rather than
through the pool, and it rewards channels a buyer asks for by name.

> **Watch out:** If you plan to apply to YPP, apply before February 1, 2027. After that date a
> new applicant needs double the watch hours and double the Shorts views. The
> [YouTube Partner Program overview](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72851)
> also says you must review and accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by
> January 31, 2027 to keep fully monetizing your content.

## How does YouTube Shorts ad revenue sharing actually work?

Shorts money does not come from ads on your Short. It comes from ads that run
**between** Shorts in the Shorts Feed, pooled across everyone. YouTube
describes four steps on the
[Shorts monetization policies page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12504220):

1. **Pool the ad revenue.** Every month, revenue from ads running between
videos in the Shorts Feed is added together.
2. **Calculate the Creator Pool.** Revenue is split between creators and music
licensing based on how many tracks each Short uses. No music sends all of it
to the Creator Pool. One track sends half. Two tracks send one third.
3. **Allocate the pool.** Each creator gets a share based on their share of
total engaged views from monetizing creators' Shorts **in each country**. A
creator with 5% of eligible engaged views is allocated 5% of the pool.
4. **Apply the revenue share.** Monetizing creators keep **45%** of their
allocated revenue, whether or not they used music.

So the 45% is not 45% of the ads on your Short. It is 45% of your slice of a
pool that music licensing has already taken a cut from. That is the single
biggest reason Shorts RPM looks small next to long-form RPM, where the creator
share is 55% of the revenue on their own video.

YouTube publishes its own worked example on that page, and it is the clearest
picture of Shorts economics anywhere. In the hypothetical: Country A has 100
million engaged Shorts views in a month and $100,000 of Shorts Feed ad revenue.
20% of those Shorts use one music track, so the Creator Pool is $90,000 and
$10,000 covers music licensing. Your Short has 1 million engaged views, which
is 1% of the country's views, so you are allocated $900. Apply the 45% share
and **you earn $405**.

Run that back as an RPM and it is about $0.41 per 1,000 engaged views, which is
five to forty times the rates creators actually report. Treat it as an
illustration of the mechanism, not a rate card: the real number depends on how
much ad revenue your country produces against how many engaged views compete
for it.

Some revenue never reaches the pool at all. YouTube excludes views on Shorts
from creators who have not accepted the module, Shorts from music partners,
ineligible views, ads on the Shorts Masthead, ads on navigational pages in the
Shorts player, and Image Posts in the Shorts Feed.

One more rule worth knowing: a Short longer than one minute that contains
claimed content is blocked and cannot be monetized at all. Since
[Shorts can now run up to three minutes](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/15424877),
that rule bites more often than it used to.

## What RPM do YouTube Shorts really pay?

YouTube publishes no official RPM table. It only defines the metric: RPM is
revenue per 1,000 views, counted **after** YouTube's revenue share, and it
includes ads, memberships, Premium revenue, Super Chat and Super Stickers
([YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9314357)). That means
the RPM in your own Studio is the number you actually keep.

For ranges you have to use trackers. Three, checked on September 15, 2026:

| Source | Date checked on the page | Reported Shorts RPM |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Mediacube](https://mediacube.io/en-US/blog/youtube-shorts-rpm) | January 30, 2026 | "most people are seeing around $0.01-$0.05 per 1,000 views" |
| [Loopex Digital](https://www.loopexdigital.com/blog/youtube-shorts-statistics) | Updated May 13, 2026 | $0.01 to $0.07 per 1,000 views |
| [LenosTube](https://www.lenostube.com/en/youtube-cpm-rpm-rates/) | Updated April 2, 2026 | Low $0.01, typical $0.05, high $0.08 |

Treat $0.04 as a planning number and $0.08 as a good month in a commercial
niche. If your own Studio shows more, use your own figure.

Loopex also reports that only 8% of Shorts creators rely on ads as their main
income. That is the real lesson of this section, and it is why the
[full list of Shorts income paths](https://www.makeviral.ai/blog/how-to-make-money-on-youtube-shorts)
matters more than the RPM argument.

## What do 100,000, 1 million and 10 million Shorts views pay?

Multiply views by RPM and divide by 1,000. Here is the same arithmetic at the
low, typical and high end of the reported range.

| Views | At $0.01 RPM | At $0.04 RPM | At $0.08 RPM |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 100,000 | $1 | $4 | $8 |
| 1,000,000 | $10 | $40 | $80 |
| 10,000,000 | $100 | $400 | $800 |

Look at the bottom row again. Ten million Shorts views in 90 days is exactly
the YPP ad-revenue threshold, and from February 1, 2027 it is the monthly
qualifier too. So the number that unlocks Shorts ad revenue pays somewhere
around $100 to $800 per quarter from ads alone.

That is not a reason to skip it. It is a reason to treat Shorts ad revenue as
the floor and stack affiliate links, a product, or long-form watch time on top.

## Why do the same views pay different amounts in different countries?

Because the Creator Pool is allocated by your share of engaged views **in each
country**, and ad prices per country are wildly different. A million views
from the United States and a million views from Pakistan are not the same
inventory.

LenosTube's country table (updated April 2, 2026) shows the spread for
long-form RPM, and the same demand curve drives the Shorts pool:

| Country | Reported long-form RPM |
| --- | --- |
| Australia | $11.95 |
| United States | $10.81 |
| Canada | $9.62 |
| Philippines | $0.15 |
| Egypt | $0.11 |

A 70x gap between the top and the bottom of that list explains almost every
"3.4 million views and I got $40" post you have read. If your audience mix is
mostly low-CPM countries, your RPM will sit at the bottom of the range no
matter how good the content is.

Three practical levers: write in English for United States search and browse
intent, pick topics with commercial demand (money, software, tools, health)
instead of pure entertainment, and keep music out of Shorts you expect to earn.

## How do you check whether your channel is eligible?

1. **Open YouTube Studio** and click **Earn** in the left menu.
2. **Read the progress card.** It shows your subscriber count, your watch hours
and your Shorts views against both thresholds.
3. **Select Get notified** if you are not there yet. YouTube emails you when
   you meet either threshold.
4. **Select Apply Now** when you qualify, accept the Base terms, then create or
link an AdSense for YouTube account.
5. **Accept the Shorts Monetization Module.** This is the step people miss.
Shorts ad revenue sharing only applies to views from the date you accept it.
6. **Watch for In Progress** in the Get Reviewed step. Review is manual and
your channel is checked against the monetization policies.

Before you apply, turn on 2-Step Verification and clear any active Community
Guidelines strike. Both are hard blockers per the
[YPP eligibility page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12475004).

## Which Shorts views do not count?

YouTube pays on eligible **engaged views**, not raw views. The
[Shorts monetization policies](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12504220)
list what gets excluded:

- Non-original Shorts, such as unedited clips from other people's movies or TV
shows, reuploads of another creator's video from YouTube or another platform,
or compilations with no original content added.
- Artificial or fake views, such as automated click or scroll bots.
- Views of Shorts that fail the advertiser-friendly content guidelines.
- Any views that happened before you accepted the Shorts Monetization Module.

Your channel also has to follow the channel monetization policies, including
the rules on repetitious and reused content. This is where automated channels
get killed, and it is a fair rule: a channel that reposts other people's clips
adds nothing. A channel that writes its own script, records its own voiceover
and builds its own visuals is original work, even with no face on screen.

## Which faceless formats reach the thresholds fastest?

The threshold is views, so the formats that win are the ones you can produce
daily at a watchable quality. These are the formats MakeViral ships, matched to
what they do for the threshold.

| Format | Why it hits the view threshold | Typical length |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Reddit story videos](https://www.makeviral.ai/tools/reddit-story-video-generator) | Story structure holds attention past the hook, which is what lifts engaged views | 45 to 90 seconds |
| [AI voiceover talking-head with gameplay](https://www.makeviral.ai/tools/ai-voiceover-video-generator) | Endless topics, no filming, and the gameplay layer keeps the eye busy | 30 to 60 seconds |
| [Fake text message stories](https://www.makeviral.ai/tools/fake-text-message-video-generator) | Reading a conversation creates a cliffhanger every few seconds | 30 to 60 seconds |
| [Quiz Shorts](https://www.makeviral.ai/tools/quiz-video-generator) | Answer delay drives replays and comments | 15 to 40 seconds |
| [Would You Rather](https://www.makeviral.ai/tools/would-you-rather-video-generator) | Comment bait, and comments feed the engagement signal | 15 to 30 seconds |
| [Meme fade-in videos](https://www.makeviral.ai/tools/meme-video-generator) | Cheapest per video, so you can post volume while you learn | 6 to 15 seconds |

MakeViral turns a prompt, a script or a product URL into a 9:16 video with an
AI script, an AI voiceover, timed captions and a background, and it generates
in bulk in the browser, so a week of Shorts is one sitting instead of seven.
The [faceless video generator hub](https://www.makeviral.ai/faceless-video-generator) lists all eight
formats.

> **Reddit Story Video Generator.** Give it a premise, get a finished vertical video: Reddit post card, AI voice, word-by-word captions and gameplay behind it. ## How and when does YouTube actually pay you?

The pipeline is slower than most creators expect, per the
[YouTube partner earnings overview](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72902):

1. The previous month's earnings land in your AdSense for YouTube balance
between the 7th and the 12th of the current month.
2. They are paid out by the 21st to the 26th of that month, if your balance has
reached the payment threshold and you have no payment holds.
3. The threshold is [$100 in the United States](https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/1709871),
with local equivalents elsewhere, such as £60 or €70.

So June earnings appear in mid-July and pay out in late July. At $0.04 RPM, a
$100 payout needs about 2.5 million Shorts views. Until then the balance rolls
over, it does not disappear.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much money is 1,000 views on YouTube Shorts?

Between about one and eight cents. Third-party trackers checked in September 2026 put Shorts RPM at roughly $0.01 to $0.07 per 1,000 views, so 1,000 views is usually a fraction of a cent to seven cents. Shorts ad revenue is a volume game, not a per-view wage.

### What are the YouTube Shorts monetization requirements?

As of September 2026, ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours in 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. You also need to be 18 or have a guardian handling AdSense, live in a YPP country, and pass review.

### How many views on YouTube Shorts to get paid?

There is no per-video view threshold. You get paid once you are accepted into the YouTube Partner Program, have accepted the Shorts Monetization Module, and your AdSense balance reaches the payment threshold, which is $100 in the United States.

### Do YouTube Shorts pay less than long-form videos?

Yes, much less per view. Shorts revenue comes from a shared Creator Pool and creators keep 45% of their allocated share, while long-form ad revenue is 55% of the revenue on your own video. A long-form RPM of several dollars against a Shorts RPM of a few cents is normal.

### Does using music reduce Shorts earnings?

Yes. YouTube splits the revenue tied to a Short's engaged views between the Creator Pool and music partners by track count. One track sends half of that revenue to music licensing. Two tracks send two thirds. A Short with no music sends all of it to the Creator Pool.

### What changes for Shorts monetization on February 1, 2027?

From that date you need at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days to earn Shorts ad and Premium revenue in a given month. New YPP applicants will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Existing members keep their current entry terms.

### Why do my Shorts views earn nothing at all?

Common reasons: you have not accepted the Shorts Monetization Module, so views before acceptance do not count. Or the views are ineligible, which covers non-original Shorts, reuploads, compilations with nothing added, bot views, and content that fails the advertiser-friendly guidelines.

### Can a faceless channel get monetized on Shorts?

Yes, if the work is yours. YouTube blocks unedited clips of other people's movies, TV and videos, but a Reddit story you script, voice and caption yourself is original. Faceless is a production style, not a policy problem. Reused content is the policy problem.
