*A chat ad reads like a message, not a commercial. Here is why it converts, 12 full scripts by skin and angle, and what each ad costs. Build one now.* (14 min read)

A fake text message ad is a vertical video ad rendered as a chat between two
people. One person raises a problem, the other names a product, and the last
message gives a soft instruction. It works because a viewer reads a chat before
deciding to. Six to twelve messages, 10 credits per ad on MakeViral.

## Why does a chat ad work on a cold feed?

A cold feed is a queue of things a viewer has no reason to watch. Every normal
ad announces itself in the first frame: a logo, a product on white, a person
starting a sentence with "so". The viewer has seen the shape a thousand times
and scrolls past the shape, not the content.

A chat skips the announcement. Three things happen in the first second:

- **The frame is already familiar.** Nobody needs to work out what they are
looking at. It is a phone inside a phone.
- **Reading starts before deciding.** People read a text bubble involuntarily,
the way they read a sign. The scroll decision arrives after message two.
- **The pitch is in someone else's mouth.** A friend saying "this fixed it" is a
recommendation. A brand saying it is a claim, and claims get argued with.

There is a fourth reason that matters for cost: nothing has to be shot. No
creator, no product in hand, no lighting. The whole ad is written, which means
you can make twelve of them in an afternoon and let the feed pick the winner.

The format also fits the way people buy on a phone. A conversation gives you a
place to put the objection and answer it in the same ad, which a 15-second
talking head rarely has room for.

## What is the difference between a text ad and a text story video?

Same interface, two different jobs, and mixing them up is the most common
mistake in this format.

| | Story video | Text message ad |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Goal | Reach, comments, follows | Clicks, installs, purchases |
| Ends on | A twist | One soft instruction |
| Product | None | Named once or twice |
| Length | 12 to 20 messages | 6 to 12 messages |
| Voice | Drama | Ordinary recommendation |
| Where it runs | Organic feed | Paid placement |

A story video earns attention by withholding. An ad has to spend that attention
inside 20 seconds, so it cannot withhold: the viewer has to know by message
three what problem is being solved.

## 12 fake text message ad scripts

## How do you write the first message?

The first message is the ad. Everything after it is delivery.

**Eight words or fewer.** A long first bubble reads as a paragraph and gets
skipped. "ok what did you change" is six words and it works because the viewer
wants to know too.

**Write it as an interruption, not an opener.** The best first messages land in
the middle of something. No "hey", no "so I wanted to tell you about".

**Make it about the reader's problem, not your product.** "why is your coffee
better than mine" beats "have you tried these beans".

**Never open on a question nobody asks.** "Tired of dull skin?" is a headline
wearing a chat bubble. A real person does not text that.

Four openers that carry their own weight: a noticed change ("your skin looks
different"), a direct demand ("HOW"), an admitted doubt ("i am not paying 120
for sneakers"), a refusal ("not telling").

> **Tip:** Write the last message first, then the first message, then fill the middle.
> The ad is a journey between two lines you already chose, which stops the
> middle from wandering.

## What does the writing voice have to be?

Texting voice, not copywriting voice. Five rules cover it.

- **Lowercase.** Capitals read as a press release. Leave the occasional shouted
word in capitals, because that is what people do.
- **One idea per bubble.** If a message has a comma and an "and", split it into
  two bubbles.
- **At most one emoji per message, and only where a person would put one.** Most
of these scripts need none at all.
- **Name the product once or twice, never three times.** Once in the middle,
once near the end if the name is short. A name repeated is an ad admitting it
  is an ad.
- **Include a typo or a short reply.** "ok", "fine", "and". Perfect grammar on
both sides is the fastest way to look staged.

The last message is the call to action and it has to stay soft. "link is in my
story if you want it" converts better than "shop now" because it matches the
voice of everything above it. Hard buttons belong on the platform, not inside
the chat.

## Which skin should you pick?

Pick the app your buyers message in. A WhatsApp ad shown to a US consumer
audience reads as foreign, and an iMessage ad shown to an Android-heavy market
reads as someone else's phone.

| Skin | Pick it when | Open it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| iMessage | US, UK, Canada, Australia consumer audiences | [iMessage ad builder](https://www.makeviral.ai/ad?platform=imessage) |
| WhatsApp | Europe, Latin America, India, the Middle East, most B2B outside the US | [WhatsApp chat ad builder](https://www.makeviral.ai/ad?platform=whatsapp) |
| Messenger | Audiences that live in Facebook groups and Marketplace | [Messenger ad builder](https://www.makeviral.ai/ad?platform=messenger) |
| Apple Notes | A founder note, a list, an apology, anything that is not a two-way chat | [Apple Notes ad builder](https://www.makeviral.ai/ad?platform=notes) |

Each skin has its own tool page with the format rules written out: the

> **Text Message Ad Generator.** A short chat between two people that ends on your product. Four skins, six angles, rendered vertical at 1080x1920 with optional voices. [Make a text message ad](https://www.makeviral.ai/ad). How it works: https://www.makeviral.ai/tools/text-message-ad-generator

## Why do these ads fail?

Six failures account for most flat results in this format.

1. **Too long.** Fourteen messages with a product mention at message eleven.
The viewer left at message six. Cut to the objection and the answer.
2. **Salesy too early.** The product named in message two reads as an ad before
the viewer is invested. Let the problem land first.
3. **A hook that is a question nobody asks.** "Struggling with sleep?" is not a
text message. It is a banner.
4. **Both sides sound like the brand.** If the skeptic uses your marketing
words, there is no skeptic, just a brand talking to itself.
5. **The call to action outside the voice.** A chat that ends in "SHOP NOW, 40%
OFF" throws away the trust the previous eight messages built.
6. **The last message hidden by the interface.** Keep the final bubble out of
the bottom of the frame, where the platform puts its own buttons.

> **Watch out:** Never suggest that a real, named person sent those messages. Invent every
> name, every number and every handle. A fabricated conversation attributed to a
> real person is an impersonation problem and a legal one, whichever ad platform
> you are on.

## What does a text message ad cost, and how do you ship one?

A text-conversation ad is 10 credits on MakeViral, and one run produces up to 5
ads. A credit is about 7 cents on the 49.99 dollar plan for 700 credits, and
about 6.7 cents on the 199.99 dollar plan for 3,000 credits.

| Output | Credits | On the 49.99 plan | On the 199.99 plan |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| One ad | 10 | 0.71 | 0.67 |
| A run of 5 ads | 50 | 3.57 | 3.33 |
| Twenty ads, four runs | 200 | 14.28 | 13.34 |

Twenty scripts written in an afternoon is the real argument for this format.
Details are on the [pricing page](https://www.makeviral.ai/pricing). Cancel anytime, 14-day refund
window on unused credits.

1. **Pick the angle and the skin** before you write a word. The skin changes the
   voice more than you expect.
2. **Write the last message, then the first.** Fill the middle to six to twelve
   bubbles.
3. **Open the [ad builder](https://www.makeviral.ai/ad)** and paste the conversation, or give it the
product and the angle and let it draft the messages.
4. **Set the contact name.** It is half the hook, and it is the field people
   forget.
5. **Render the run**, then watch every ad muted. If it does not read without
sound, it will not read in a feed.
6. **Ship at least three variants** of the first message against the same body.

> **iMessage Ad Generator.** Blue and grey bubbles, typing dots and a read receipt, with your product landing in message nine. Rendered vertical at 1080x1920. [Make an iMessage ad](https://www.makeviral.ai/ad?platform=imessage). How it works: https://www.makeviral.ai/tools/imessage-ad-generator

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a fake text message ad?

It is a vertical video ad rendered as a chat between two people, or as a typed note, where the conversation carries the pitch. The messages appear one at a time with typing indicators, so the viewer reads it the way they read their own phone. The product gets named once or twice, near the end.

### Why do text message ads convert?

They borrow a reading habit the viewer already has. A chat needs no setup shot, no narrator and no explanation, so the first message lands before the scroll decision gets made. The format also carries a pitch in someone else's voice, which reads as a recommendation rather than a claim.

### How long should a text message ad be?

Six to twelve messages, which is roughly 10 to 25 seconds at a natural reveal speed. Six is enough for a single objection, twelve is the ceiling before the middle sags. If your script needs more than twelve messages, it is two ads, not one.

### Which chat skin should I use?

Match the app your buyers actually message in. iMessage suits a US consumer audience, WhatsApp suits most of Europe, Latin America, India and the Middle East, Messenger suits audiences that live in Facebook groups, and Apple Notes suits a founder note or a list that is not a conversation at all.

### Are fake text message ads allowed on ad platforms?

The format itself is a creative choice, but ad platforms have their own rules on misleading creatives, on impersonation and on claims. Read the current policy of the platform you are buying on before you launch, and never build an ad that suggests a real named person sent those messages.

### How much does a text message ad cost to make?

On MakeViral a text-conversation ad is 10 credits, and one run produces up to 5 ads. That is about 71 cents per ad on the 49.99 dollar plan for 700 credits, or about 67 cents per ad on the 199.99 dollar plan for 3,000 credits. A run of 5 ads is 50 credits.

### What is the difference between a text ad and a text story video?

A story video is written for reach: a twist, a cliffhanger, no product. An ad is written for a purchase: a short conversation that ends on one soft instruction. Same interface, opposite goals, and a story script pasted into an ad slot sells nothing.
